Requiem for Black Survival

A Crossroads Project by Sharbreon Plummer & Lance L. Smith

Requiem for Black Survival is a call to remember the embodied practices that our ancestors stewarded across generations of perseverance. This multi-modal installation honors the workings and diasporic spiritual traditions that made their home in Black cultural memory, especially those held by Black women within the Deep South. We see this project as a conduit to a collective past, a toolkit for present times, and a beacon for the future.

Requiem for Black Survival is both an autobiographical, artistic, and venerative endeavor between artists Sharbreon Plummer & Lance L. Smith. Originally connected through creative practice, our relationship deepened into that of spiritual kinship. As we’ve cultivated our own relationships with our ori, personal workings, land, and Spirit, we’ve remained connected through our mutual honoring of our foremother and our communal empowerment through Black cultural and nature-based spiritual practice. Through this fellowship, we have created new work that not only speaks to this relational aspect of personal Conjuration methods but also draws upon Black women-led practices and materiality that serve as the foundations that continue to inform generations of Conjure workers.
